Where Diets Go Wrong and How to Do it Right

Diets fail for two reasons. They succeed when you follow four principles.

I’ve been in this business for a long time and I’ve helped a lot of people learn to make smarter decisions. But let me tell you, it’s not always an easy process and there most certainly are bumps along the road. “Dieting” in its traditional sense can be painful, frustrating and sometimes even unhealthy. That’s for two primary reasons, which I’ll explain very briefly. Then I want to share with you my “Clean and Colorful Concept,” based on four Universal Diet Truths that can shift you from a past of diet failure to a future of health and happiness.

Ready? Set? Let’s go!

Why Most Diets Fail #1:

Diets tend to fail us when we look at them in terms of restriction or elimination. That’s where hunger, anger, guilt, and dissatisfaction are born. You simply can’t live your best life when you’re not presented the opportunity to enjoy the food you love.

Why Most Diets Fail #2:

There simply isn’t one diet that is right for everybody on this planet. What works for me may not work for you. Is gluten-free for you? Low carb? Vegan? Paleo? Those diet philosophies are as conflicting as they can be, and none of them are right for everyone. In the end, the time and energy we’ve committed to trying (and often abandoning) new diets can be exhausting, time-consuming, and ultimately, incredibly frustrating.

Let’s Keep Things Simple Here

Here’s the good news: while there may not be one specific “diet” that can help us all, from all my experience, there are certain principles that everybody can benefit from. And they aren’t that complicated, expensive, or time-consuming, and you don’t even have to give up your favorite foods. This is not a lifestyle overhaul; this is simply an upgrade.

4 Simple Principles = 1 Diet Philosophy that Works for Everybody!

This is the Clean and Colorful concept. It’s based on Four Universal Diet Truths that can improve the quality of life of all those who do these four things on more days than they don’t:

  1. Eat Less Processed Food: Foods with no or very short ingredient lists.
  2. Eat all 5 Colors Every Day (red, orange, yellow, green, and indigo): From color-rich fruits and veggies.
  3. Swap one Snack or Meal per day with a Juice or Smoothie: Dense plant power.
  4. Exercise at least 21-Minutes a Day 6 Days a Week: Get started and build the habit.

That’s it! It really could be that simple! And maybe when you look at those four principles right now, it doesn’t look simple. But trust me, the process of figuring it out can be fun and well worth the effort, as it can literally change your life and your relationship with food. These are the concepts we work on in all my coaching and I invite you to watch this video series or read this more detailed post to get a more in-depth perspective on why I’ve selected these “Universal Diet Truths” and how you can weave these principles into your everyday life to find better health and more happiness.
